Jochem Mestriner

Jochem Mestriner (born in 1998 in Maastricht, The Netherlands ), lives and works in Rotterdam. His practice centres on painting as a slow, accretive act, building surfaces over extended sessions through layered pigment, solvent, and gestural residue, materials as chemically volatile as they are visually seductive. The canvas becomes a site of quiet intoxication, where what draws the eye is also what unsettles it. At the core of his work is the figure of the Drosera, the sundew plant that lures, traps, and digests, a logic Mestriner extends to the painting itself: a desire machine that produces attraction and then consumes it. Rooted in the traditions of still life and sottobosco painting and informed by literature, philosophy, art history, botany, and entomology, his work moves between beauty and harm, the living and the preserved.
